How do you know if an old book is valuable?


Many people inherit books, manuscripts and documents without knowing their history. A nineteenth-century letter hidden in an album may contain the handwriting of a major historical figure. A family Bible may preserve centuries of ownership history. A book purchased for a few złoty may contain an important provenance inscription or a rare early edition. The price something has sold for in the past may be relevant, or it may represent the market having misunderstood the value of an object entirely.

The value of historical material is determined by a combination of factors. The main factors are:

  • Age, though older does not automatically mean rarer
  • Rarity - How many copies survive? How often does the market see examples?
  • Historical importance - Is the object connected with a major person, event or institution?
  • Provenance - Who owned it? Where has it been?
  • Condition and completeness - Is it intact? Are all pages present?
  • Documentation - Can its history be researched and verified?

Common Misconceptions About Old Books

  • “My book is hundreds of years old. Is it valuable?”

    Age ≠ rarity. I have sold books which are over four hundred years old for less than 50zł. Age can be an important factor, but it is never the only consideration. Read a guide on valuation here.

  • A famous author’s name appears in the book. Is it an autograph?

    Maybe, but probably not. Many books were printed with facsimile (fake) signatures, even as early as the 1600s. It was also common for owners to write the names of authors in the book somewhere for their own identification. Genuine signed copies of books are uncommon and are almost always more valuable than if they were not signed.

  • "Why aren't you wearing gloves to handle such treasures!"

    Modern best practice is to handle antique books and manuscripts with clean dry hands without wearing gloves as they reduce dexterity and are more likely to cause damage by wearing them. Some types of manuscripts might require gloves, but that is the exception, not the rule.
