An attractive early edition of Du Pin’s work on the Church Fathers, scarce complete; it discusses the lives, works, doctrines, and editions of the principal Christian ecclesiastical writers.
It is complete with all five parts bound into seven volumes with an engraved frontispiece in the first volume, plus the often wanting two-part quarto supplement which was separately issued in a larger format a decade later, here present with both parts contemporaneously bound into one with the handsome engraved frontispiece. This set additionally includes a volume of the Remarques, written by an unnamed other author, similarly bound.
Contemporary French calf gilt, titles lettered in gilt, plain endpapers. Remarques volume bound slightly distinctly, nonetheless contemporaneously to the other volumes of the principal set. Dissertation volume bound in plain calf with tooled morocco label laid down to upper spine, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins. Bindings rubbed, mild wear, some minor loss to leather, all boards attached; the volumes show well on the shelf. Attractive.
Textually collates as complete, Remarques volume with printed signature error in gathering Y (dropping Y2), but nonetheless complete. Insofar as it is possible to confirm, the present set appears to collate as complete. However, in the absence of a digitised exemplar, this cannot be stated with complete certainty. Generally clean throughout the text blocks, a few contemporary manuscript corrections. Several pages are possibly misprinted as the text has blank sections where one might expect text; this is not extensive.
