Le Nouveau Testament Mons: Gaspard Migeot [i.e. Elzevir], 1668 Quarto
A handsome copy of the celebrated Jansenist New Testament, sumptuously bound in two volumes and elegantly ruled in red throughout, with generous margins and finely printed Roman type.
Known as the New Testament of Mons, this influential Port-Royal translation enjoyed immediate success and was repeatedly reprinted; the present sixth edition appeared only a year after the first. Its circulation was nevertheless fiercely controversial, and Pope Clement IX threatened excommunication against those who read, printed, sold or possessed the translation. The imprint of “Gaspard Migeot” is probably fictitious, and the edition is generally attributed to the Elzevir press.

Contemporary full red morocco gilt, rubbed, spines uniformly sunned, some ink staining to rear board of volume II. All edges gilt. Bindings secure, mild shelf wear. Nonetheless attractive. Marbled endpapers, bound with numerous blanks. Ink inscription to general title, slightly offset to verso (frontis). Generally clean throughout the text blocks, some minor spotting, mildly toned, a few small stains, else very good. Elegantly red-ruled throughout. Collates as complete.
