A miniature pocket edition of Thomas Kempis' influential devotional work, printed at Avignon while the city still formed part of the Papal States, nearly four decades before its annexation by Revolutionary France in 1791.
Emerging from the Devotio Moderna movement of the late fourteenth century, the Imitation of Christ encouraged a more personal form of Christian devotion, emphasising humility, interior prayer, and the imitation of Christ's life. From the fifteenth century onwards it became one of the most widely read works of Christian spirituality in Europe. The miniature format reflects its intended purpose as a portable devotional companion, allowing the reader to carry the work and consult it throughout the day.

Condition
Contemporary full calf with a gilt title and decorations to spine. Titular gilt dulled. Binding lightly rubbed with wear to extremities. Page edges toned with marks. Crack to the gutter between ffep and title. Text block collates as complete, clean with edge toning. Small red ink stains to the bottom of the title and an ink ownership inscription to the verso.
